Falls Church Cable Access Corporation — I’m Running
I first had lunch with Matt Smith, president of SmithGifford and fellow City resident, a few months ago. One of the things we talked about was my interest in getting more involved with the Falls Church Community. Matt is very “plugged in,” having lived in Falls Church since 1999 and earning the 2008 Pillar of the Community Award from the Chamber of Commerce. At that lunch, Matt described the Falls Church Cable Access Corporation (which runs the local community TV channel) as one of the great resources in the City that has great unfulfilled potential. When the opportunity to run for a seat on the FCCAC Board of Directors came up, I jumped at it.
The FCCAC operates the impressive FCC-TV studio located in George Mason High School, where shows can be recorded and where programming is run. The studio has undergone some renovations, and indeed shows lots of potential. I recently attended a board meeting to get a feel for how the group operates and how I might be able to help. I’m confident that I can.
I’d love to see the FCCAC make a leap forward in the use of technology. My area of focus would be online, and I would work to launch a completely new web site for the FCCAC. The site would not only better promote City programming, but would be an additional distribution channel for programming — why not put the shows online? Furthermore, I’d work to expand viewership. One benefit of putting the content currently confined to the cable TV channel online is that it becomes much more sharable. Done right, this could greatly expand our audience.
Working with Matt, who has extensive experience both video production as well as branding and marketing, I believe we can completely transform the station in a positive way. Those involved in establishing and growing the station all these years have done an incredible job. Thanks to their hard work, there is tremendous potential with the organization, and I hope to have an opportunity to bring fresh ideas, broader expertise, and new energy to the board.
If you are already an FCCAC member, I would very much appreciate you voting for Matt and me during (or before) the October 20th election. If you aren’t yet a member, you can easily become one. All you have to do is complete this form (PDF) which you can read about here. Membership costs $10 for an individual, and will allow you to vote at the annual meeting on October 20th (or before by mail.)
If you have questions about the FCCAC, why I’m running for the board, or what I’ll work to do as a board member, please comment below and I’d be happy to share my thoughts.
