More Thoughts on This Site: It’s Not Political

Since no one is reading this blog yet (ever?), I’ll continue sharing my thoughts on what it could / should be.  This past weekend I enjoyed discovering Blueweeds, the blog written primarily by Mike Gardner, husband of our mayor Robin Gardner.  I haven’t met Mike or Robin yet, though I hope to have that chance soon.  The blog has a ton of great content about the City, including descriptions of events and updates on local businesses — both things I’d like to share here as I experience them.

Mike’s blog is also highly political (right now, anyway — you’d think there were a major national election on or something), covering everything from local to national politics.  Now, I think local politics are fascinating — I’m just starting to get plugged in a bit, and I’m excited to learn more.  I think I’ll share my experiences in local politics here when I can.  My initial feeling, though, is that I won’t share my personal political views on this site.  Like it or not, political opinion is an emotional, polarizing topic.  I don’t want to discourage people of any background or political persuasion from experiencing things on this site just because they have a gut reaction of disagreement when they first arrive (for the record, if you’re curious, I had no such reaction to Mike’s blog).

This isn’t a knock on Blueweeds at all — I really like what they’re doing.  It’s just some “stream-of-consciousness” thoughts on what kind of site I’d like this to evolve into.  My opinion will be all over this site, but politics (and probably religion) is something I’ll likely keep more to myself for now.

  1. Welcome to the (growing) Falls Church blog community, and thanks for the mention. Blueweeds is community blog, focused on local politics, which gets a little heated every once in a while. Sort of like a virtual house party. Still we manage to express ourselves and still have some fun.

    Best of luck here.

  2. @Mike - thanks for the comment / welcome. Time will tell if I can keep this blog going, but either way I’m excited to be in The City and meeting more people. I love the “virtual party house” vibe on your site — thanks for taking the time to do it. Maybe we should have a Fall Church City blogger meet-up sometime?
